Here we go again.

Include Common Emergency Scenarios When You Plan

Plan for the emergencies that are most likely to happen where you live

  • Be familiar with natural disaster risks in your community.
  • Consider how you will respond to emergencies that can happen anywhere, such as home fires and floods.
  • Consider how you will respond to emergencies that are unique to your region, such as volcanoes, tsunamis or tornadoes.
  • Think about emergencies that may require your family to shelter in place (such as a winter storm), vs. emergencies that may require evacuation (such as a hurricane).

Plan what to do in case you are separated during an emergency

Plan what to do if you have to evacuate

  • Decide where you would go and what route you would take to get there, such as:
    • A hotel/motel
    • The home of friends or relatives a safe distance away
    • An evacuation shelter
  • Practice evacuating your home twice a year. Grab your emergency kit, just like you will in a real emergency, then drive your planned evacuation route. Plot alternate routes on your map in case roads are impassable. Make sure you have locations and maps saved on devices such as cell phones and GPS units and on paper.
  • Plan ahead for your pets. Keep a phone list of pet-friendly hotels/motels and animal shelters that are along your evacuation routes. Remember, if it’s not safe for you to stay home, it’s not safe for your pets either.

Alright, my mindset, as I do my prepping, is the same as the Red Cross. We both want to look at what is most likely to happen, in the foreseeable future, rather than, “doomsday prepping,” trying to plan what to do, if we experience The End Of The World As We Know It.

So, I will now list the different places I might go, as a way of talking to myself, (and you are getting to spy on me, by reading this diary.)

Here in Wichita, Kansas, the most common reasons to bug out, would be floods and tornadoes. Very little flooding, but it depends on exactly where you live, in Wichita. And tornadoes do not destroy as many homes as you might think. Most tornadoes totally miss all towns and cities. When they hit, very few homes are destroyed.

Also, I think I should think about:

running out of money, or,

becoming physically unable to take care of myself.

So, here is my list, of places I could go to, in any of those situations:

  • My brother-in-law and sister-in-law, and their children. I used to live with them, for four years, and they would welcome me back.
  • Two other options, here in Wichita, Kansas, a nephew and an auntie.
  • In Russell, Kansas, I have a nephew, and a niece, and the son of the niece, and his wife and children, who live next door. There should be room, in the home of the niece, and I would have the emotional support, of so much family, right next door.
  • In Irving, Texas, I have a niece, who has a husband and a son. They have a newly renovated house, with plenty of room.
  • In Humble, Texas, I have a niece, who is single, and lives alone, in a modest house. She maintains her house well. She is a college professor, who teaches from home.

Well, as I said, I mostly just wanted to write out those options, so I can think about them. There are many emotional barriers, between any two adults. Sometimes, folks can work around them, quite well. Other times, it may be too painful. That is why I felt the need to consider all these options, rather than just think of one, and then get in a panic, when that one does not work out.

Please, give me feedback, in the comments. Especially, tell me that you understand what I wrote, about emotional barriers, between any two adults. In other words, there might be troubles, at any of these places on my list.

Oh, I almost forgot. I did not make a list, but there might be two lists, that include less than all my possessions. One list, would be what I would take with me, the first time I travel, to any of those destinations. The second list, would be what I would go and fetch, on a second trip. My first list would have clothing and medicine, and some food. The second list would have, mainly, more food. Of course, sooner or later, I would need to figure out what to do, with all the rest of my items.

Of course, if this ever happens, on a temporary basis, that might be easy. Such as, if my home is destroyed by a fire or a tornado, I would only need a place to stay, for a month or less, until I move in to a different apartment. That whole process, should be very easy, since those emotional barriers, would have less time to cause problems.

Okay, as I said, give me feedback, in the comments.

Hugs!
